Aya Medany is an Egyptian Olympic Modern Pentathlete born in November 20, 1988. She participate in three summer Olympic games, Athens 04’ Beijing 08’ & London 12’, She is an Athlete commission member for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since (2016-), Commission member of Public affairs and sport development in the IOC (2016-), Champion of peace (2016-), Chair of the Athletes commission in the international federation for modern pentathlon (2016-), Chair of the Athlete commission in the Egyptian Olympic Committee (2019-), Board Member of El-shams Sporting Club in Cairo (one of the biggest sport clubs in the middle east).
Started her Sport career since she was 7 years, her family 1st life objective at this time to save money to let Aya and her brother play sport in the club during the summer vacation.
She tried Judo, Rolling, Synchronizing, Ballet, Swimming and Pentathlon, She found in Pentathlon what she was dreaming for, at the beginning the swimmers and the Athletics used to win the competition because at this age they only do (Swimming and Running), later on, at age of 9 she started to do Shooting and Fencing, where there was no more place for the individuals sports to enter.
The Head Coach of the National Team asked her to join the Egyptian National Team in January 19, 2001 when her age was only 12 years. (if you count after me you will find me mistaken but I’m not, because she was born in November :))
She didn’t disappoint her coach as one year later She got her 1st Youth World Championship (WCS) Medal under 18 years (Silver Medal) when she was only 13. In 2003 She won the African Qualification for the Olympic Games at the Age of 14 (don’t count after me :) it was in February) to become the Youngest Pentathlete to Participate in the Olympic Games for Pentathlon and in the Egyptian Olympic Team history until now.
2006 was impressive for her as she won ‘3 Gold medals’ in (Youth WSC in Italy, Junior WSC in China, Senior world cup (Egypt)) just in 3 months in 3 different countries and 3 different contents. And one year later she Qualified for her second Olympic Games Beijing and finished in the 7th place and in the Senior Pentathlon world Ranking she became number 1 worldwide after the games as the first ever African or Arab athlete became world ranking number one.
Medany began wearing hijab after the 2008 Summer Olympics, she continues her achievements’ but in 2010 she was thinking for retirement due to the ban on the full-body swimsuits imposed by the swimming federation FINA, which pentathlon takes its swimming rules from. Medany wants to swim in an outfit conforming to the Muslim faith, while the swimming requirements state that outfits "shall not cover the shoulder, nor extend below the knee with an open back". And she believes one day she can change this rule, so she continue for two more years and qualified to London 2012 summer Olympic games as the first Pentathlon participate in the games with HIJAB.
Medany retired after London and got marry and have a baby boy, but one year later she wanted to return back to the field and she did, 2015 she won the silver medal in the African Championship, but then she switch to Fencing and entered the Egyptian Fencing Team, to be the first Egyptian female athlete and MOM to join two National Teams with two different
sport and also to won African medals, as she won the Gold Medal in the African Championships for Fencing in 2018.
Her father Mahmoud Medany was a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 alongside Al Gore. That’s why She works as a teacher assisting at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology and Maritime Transport so she can take her father Steps. And she is currently studying PhD in Latvia in Air Transport Management.
During her Sport carrier she was awarded in 2008 the Medal of first-class honor in sport from President of Egypt. And Being awarded from the president of the International Olympic committee for her achievement and got the Title of the “African women and sport for the year of 2016”. After this award she made a project called “Changing Sport Culture” she went to Schools and Villages in Egypt to spread the meaning of the Olympic spirit and the important of doing sport, also she went to the Syrian refugee camp (Al-zataari) in Jordan and she teach them how to fence by recycled material, so she was awarded from the president of Egypt, Abdelfattah Al-sisi in the Egyptian women day as one of the “10 Egyptian Female role model” in all majors.
You can simply call her (Daughter – Sister – Champion – Women – Wife – Mom – Teacher – Student – Change Maker – African – Arabian – Muslim – Egyptian – Sportive – With Hijab :))
